Speeches 2024

LI: to hook up audience with a persuasive speech.

This week our class was working on speeches to take part of a speech competition, in front of our school. We decided to make a copy of a template to get started on making a speech, by using the 5 important body parts of a speech, introduction, body paragraph 1, body paragraph 2, counterargument, and conclusion. The way we want our speeches to be like, is like a speech with meaningful expression, pause, eye contact, known from your heart, and true information. Next when we filled up the template with our writing skills to make a speech, we started to make cue cards. We started to make cue cards by making 2×3 tables on a Google doc to print it out, so when it gets printed, we will cut it out, looking like cards to, the fact that we made cue cards, is to speak our speech even if we haven’t memorised it or not. After we did that we used a web named Adobe Express, we used it to erase the noise from the background while recording. After that we got into groups of 4’s and 5’s to test the cue cards out when it was printed, we tested it just by using highlights, the red highlight means to use expression and the green highlight means to pause for a breath. When we finished telling our speeches, we voted for 1 person in each group to be in the finals, which our lucky talented competitors that were voted, was Aliyan, Melle, Lisea, Siniva, Louis, and Dalilah. When we finished listening to their fabulous speeches, we took a break to save our work for next week.

I found this activity challenging because it took me a while to learn my speech, even though I didn’t get voted to be in the finals, I’m still proud.

Duffy’s 30th Birthday Celebration

This week our school decided to have a celebration of someone’s birthday, Duffy, (Duffy is a special person to us because he has been giving out free books to kids in our school since 1999, 1999 was when our school started to help, the point of Duffy’s dream was to make kids realise, reading books is cool and also educational). We started off with decorations and gifts all around the hall for Duffy. We decided to make party hats and design boxes for books as a reading suprise. Then we settled out some chairs and mats for people to sit on, especially extra chairs at the front for our visitors. When we were ready we got in position, settleing our classes, keeping the school updated about any new updates thats happen, and to sing songs, and 2 very special song for Duffy, “Read about it” and “Happy Birthday”. My favourite part about Duffy’s Birthday is that the school got to meet a police officer, a person that can do a donald duck impression and 2 girls called Crystal and Trina. The school had plenty of cake sent to each class after the duffy birthday celebration.

I enjoyed joining along to celebrate Duffy’s 30th Birthday.

Comrades Marathon.

LI: to make connections with myself, the text, and the world.

This week me and my group read a story about a marathon named the “Comrades Marathon”, (a marathon is basically a long foot distance race, most marathons are 42 km long). We started off by predicting what the text would be about, I predict marathons because I use pictures and the title of the story as evidence to back up my prediction. Then we added some more effort to our commenting by using words like “might, should, could, would” and also “because” to make our comments a little more deeper. We learnt that the Comrades Marathon is a 87 kilometers, 54 miles and a 12 hour run. We also learnt that the meaning of the word “Endurance” is similar to motivation, to never give up on what your focusing.

I found this activity motivational because I have learnt to not give up on what I want to focus on, like using Endurance.

Violet Walrond

LI: to make connections to myself, the text and the world.

Today this week me and my reading group read a book about a female named “Violet Walrond”. She does swimming in the Olympics for NZ’s first national team, its surprising for a small team to win medals, especially for a teenager to win medals for swimming. There was a word spreaded about her entering several Olympic Games, of her testing out a swimming style named the “crawl”. Violet Walrond had retired at the age of 18, forced by her father, known as the coach of the first NZ national team.

I found this activity incredible because of learning what had happened during the past in the Olympics including with NZ’s first national team.

Our First Olympians

LI: To make connections to (self, text, world).

LI: To make inferences about the event in the text using clues provided by the author.

LI: To practice skimming and scanning by looking for keywords in the text

Today this week we read about New Zealand’s first national Olympics team. Before me and my group read this text, we commented on this text, of what we think this text would be about, my infer is that it would be about NZ’s first team. When they had their first NZ team, the colour of their photos were black and white, they only had 4 athletes in their team, and there were silver ferns on their athletic clothes (silver ferns represents NZ).  We learnt of how to back up our comments with evidence, why its important to back up your comment, and how to get clues about the text from the pictures without reading. we also learnt that its important to back up your comment because it supports our predictions, the keyword to it is “because”.

I found this activity interesting because its quite fun to read about the past.

Fun Fact: There was only one female in the NZ’s first team, her father was the coach.

Bengal Swamp Tigers

LI: to write an information report that informs the reader about the swamp tigers.

Swamp Tiger

Swamp tigers have a very distinct fur color coming in orange with black stripes with white patches on their legs, face and chest. These beasts are very muscular and have strong jaws made to shred meat. They usually weigh about 300 – 660 kg. They are also known as the Panthera Tigris Tigris.

Did you know that swamp tigers grow 1.5 bigger than original tigers

These huge beasts need to eat, their diet consists of large bodied deers, pigs, cows, goats, buffalos, humans, but what makes these tigers so unique is that swamp tigers have adapted their territory so well they started hunting for fish and crabs.

(Are swamp tigers allowed to eat other than meat).

The swamp tigers live around grasslands with swamps. They also live around countries with a hot temperature.

We used our smart searching skills to find facts about the Bengal Swamp Tiger. Once we had found the information we needed, we made notes in our own words. We used these notes to help us write our information reports. Information reports give readers with information on a chosen topic by providing them with facts.

Swamp Tigers.

LI: to find information and take notes.

This week me and my partner Kale did some research on swamp tigers, swamp tigers are endangered species of tigers that are bigger than you think, we started by searching up information on google about swamp tigers. Then we moved on to watching videos to learn about swamp tigers appearance, diet, habitat and behaviour. After that we made a copy of information report document to gather all our information about swamp tigers. Then we finished our work by putting out information report on google slides so we can make a video of it for our audience to hear it.

I enjoyed this activity because its interesting to learn and research about interesting animals like swamp tigers.

Taniwha name

Today my activity that I did was to design a taniwha with my name along it, and by designing I mean about creating it on a google drawing, for me I had to think of my taniwha name and design it on a paper like following blueprints, when im done with my drawing of my taniwha i just have to design for real on a google drawing.

I enjoyed this activity because I get to learn how to design nice things.

Care Values X Treaty of Waitangi

Today me and my group’s task was to write about our school care values compared to the Treaty of Waitangi. Our school care values are confidence, attitude, respect and excellence, which me and my group compared them to the story of the Treaty of Waitangi. I liked this because it shows information of the discovery of NZ.

I enjoy this activity because I liked finding out information of the discovery of how the maori people found NZ.

Taniwha Name

Today my task was to create my name disguised as a taniwha. A taniwha is a maori monster that is made up in maori traditional stories, which I chose a sea taniwha. I liked doing my taniwha name because it shows of who I am.

I enjoy this activity because it includes my name with a taniwha.
