Paleontology DLO

LI: to create a DLO that shows clearly labelled examples of each fossil type.

For today’s Inquiry learning activity we created DLO’s about Paleontology. The other day we learnt about the purpose and who exactly are paleontologists, by researching the information. Now that we know all about them our task was to create DLO’s about type of fossils. My 2 fossils that I chose to analyze and research about is the Triceratops, and the Tyrannosaurus rex, which first I used my smart searching skills to search for the images, attached with attributions [source of each image], and also along with plenty of information about each of their habitats, appearances, label/name, and many other things about them. Above here is a picture of my Paleontology DLO.

I found this activity very interesting because of learning about fossils and its species.

Decimal Numbers & Division DLO

LI: to divide decimal numbers, using short division.

For today’s Maths learning activity, me and my group learnt how to use short division against decimal numbers. [If you don’t know, Decimal Numbers: They are digits that are parts of a whole number, and Division: It is a method of using multiplication in another way. When me and my group finished on doing and marking our work, we decided to make a DLO about what we have learnt today. Above here is a picture of the DLO me and my group created.

I found this activity very interesting for learning a new skill, especially in Maths.

Maths Group 3

LI: to multiply decimal numbers, using algorithms

For today’s Maths activity me and group 3 continued learning how to use algorithms against decimal numbers. For this week we did some multiplication again decimal numbers along with some whole numbers, and that this time the method was pretty interesting and easy to handle, learn and to use. What we learnt was that the local method was a remove decimal, multiply and add the decimal in the answer. Above here is a picture of the Math DLO that me and my group created, [the paragraph in the middle is the multiplication paragraph]. We gathered all our knowledge of math’s and what we have learnt, into the DLO.

I found very interesting because of learning a new skill, which is to use multiplication against decimal numbers.

Maths Grp 3

LI: to subtract decimal numbers, using algorithms.

For today’s maths activity me and group 3 learnt how to subtract decimal numbers. decimal numbers are basically parts of a whole number like for eg: 6.3. the dot is the local symbol that represents the decimal numbers. The activity was to use subtraction against decimal numbers including whole numbers with the equations. After when we completed the activity, we decided to make a DLO about using algorithms with decimals numbers, by that we are still going to be using subtraction and many other mathematics with decimal numbers like addition, multiplication and division,

I found this activity very interesting because of learning a new skill.

Paleontology

LI: to understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs.

LI: to recognise different types of fossils and how they are formed.

For today’s Inquiry learning activity, we learnt about paleontologists. A paleontologist is a person that studys fossils. The purpose is that they search and follow the little bits of the fossil’s trace, and when they find fossils, they collect it, study it, and also to anaylze what type of fossil. The activity was to get into a group of 4, figure out about paleontologists, and make a 50 word statement, (my group included a image with its attribution just in case). Above is a picture of me and my group’s 50 word statement and our image with it’s attribution.

Matariki 2025

LI: to identify Matariki as the Maori New Year and explain its cultural importance.

LI: Explain how the rising of Matariki signaled a time of celebration, reflection, and preparation.

LI: Create a piece of work that expresses their understanding of the significance of the Matariki stars.

For this week’s Inquiry activity, me and my group (Me, Haloti & Jeremiah) decided to make a presentation all about Matariki, (including the stars). We were given instructions that we have specific questions and missions to complete about the meaning of Matariki, it’s importance, it’s celebrations, it’s past, including us making designs about Matariki. Above here is a peak of our Matariki Presentation.

I found this activity interesing as it was quite a mystery, especially using our research to look at Matariki’s history.

Impact of Volcanoes

LI: to discuss the impact of volcanoes on the enviroment & human communities.

For this week’s inquiry activity, we decided to research about the impact of specific volcanoes. The volcano that me and my group (Me, CJ, River & Taisorn) chose was called “Whakaari White Island”. We used our smart researching skills to look at several links and gathering information about many things about it like it’s name, location, age, type, along with 2 interesting fact about’s Whakaari White Island’s volcanic eruption. Then after that, me and my group decided to add all of the information that we gathered, all inside 1 DLO, including some attributed images. After that, when we finished, we discussed that we would decorate it. 1 interesting fact: The Whakaari White Island’s volcano is a phreatomagmatic type, because it’s eruption has eliminated exactly 22 people, which their bodies were eventually washed out in the wild sea.

I enjoyed this extremely interesting and fun activity because of learning a new word: “Phreatomagmatic, (in volcanic terms, it means that it is 1 of the deadliest volcanoes ever witnessed)”

Volcano Animation

LI: to make a animation of how volcanoes erupt on Earth.

For today’s Inquiry activity, our class learnt about volcanoes, we decided to gather each other into groups of 3, I was with my classmates: CJ & Junior. The main point of the activity that we applied to do as a mission to accomplish, was that our goal was to make a animation of how volcanoes erupt of Earth, (the reason why I said Earth is because other planets also have volcanoes, for eg: Mars has the largest volcanoes existed, but Mars does not have laws of physics and living like Earth, the activity is about the volcanoes that are alive with us in the present). Above here is me and my group’s animation of how volcanoes erupt. (Quick Fact: The reason of most volcanoes erupting is because of 2 plates called, Oceania plate and continental plate, which when they engage, it started to trigger the magma chamber inside the volcano, which eventually erupts).

I enjoyed making a animation on how volcanoes erupt, with my classmates because of learning that there is a possibility of the Earth’s tectonic plates shattering, (tectonic plates are like the Earth’s skin, if it shatters, it could possibly cause a earthquake or a volcanic eruption).

Maths / Place Values up to Millions & 2 Decimal Places

LI: to name place and total values up to millions & 2 decimals places.

For todays Maths me and my maths group worked on how to round up to numbers in places values of millions and also up to 2 decimal places. As you see here above, this a picture of me and my group’s DLO of what we have been doing for maths, along with examples of our working. What we have learnt from the mistakes that we first made, we learnt that rounding both decimals and whole numbers does not make a difference, it just means the same thing in a different explanation, according to our mistakes of learning.

I have enjoyed this activity because learning from mistakes could help me build on to move on to the next step.

Why Maungarei Sleeps

LI: to write a pourquoi story that follows the structure and paints a picture inside the reader’s mind.

_________________________________________________________________________________

History of Maungarei | 1400 AD

Thursday 29th May 1960

It is told that long ago there was a mighty warrior on guard in absolute berserk mood, as his name flows around Tamaki Makaurau, Maungarei, the heated mountain with fiery temper. Legend says that in the previous generations the land was empty but full with creatures, living plants and humans, as it was Maungarei’s honour and duty to provide and defend them from any harm that comes their way. As enemies started underestimating, this temper that Maungarei welds, perfects this respected warrior. Battles go on and on as if the humans were stuck in a loop, they have been blessed by the one and only guardian that they show most gratitude to is Maungarei. One day went by that changed everything, everyone’s curiosity had kept them thinking of why, why suddenly has Maungerei temper gone solid cold, his confidence have went far out of existence like it was in thin air, including the berserking roars go echoing by in thin air, slowly passing away.

“Fellas, Where are you going, you know I don’t like being left behind?” Maungarei had questioned

“Apologies our friend, but we have no choice, your temper of berserking heat has gone too far to keep us out of danger, but even worse, possibly putting us in trouble, may we meet again one day!” a crowd of villagers answered

“Please, anything but that, we can talk about this, right?” Maungarei complained

“Don’t worry buddy, as long as you exchange that temper into good use, like sleeping or avoiding addiction of exploding” Someone replied

“That is the agreement, between you and us that you can’t forget or break” Someone had added

“I will try my best to obey our agreement, my fellow friends!” Maungarei happily yelled out

Sunday 20th April 1972

After a day or two, the humans had finally solved the mystery that kept them concerned. Maungarei has not abandoned his duty including the everyone else, Maungarei has decided to rest, as he was exhausted from the battles that he attended, no matter the cost, him showing commitment, but it was time that the land would recover, the strength and energy of Maungarei still lives on as it flows from the body to the land.

Past the generations of when the legend of Maungarei still lived, Tamaki Makaurau began to exchange into an extremely beautiful & incredible future, along with where Maungarei still stands, happily watching over the ones he had defended.

Mysteries like this are one of a kind but have had plenty of room for it to happen a couple of times, going from centuries into decades. Connections are types of strength too, that can go around from anywhere to anywhere, for example: Tongariro, Mt.Taranaki & Ruapehu. According to the research, it could be possible for them to erupt again once every 2 or 3 generations at least.

________________________________________________________________________________

Our activity for today’s writing was to create a pourquoi story about why Maungarei has been sleeping. (a pourqoui story is a type of story that has details for the reader to constructe and build a image of what would happen in the story, depending what the story is really about). After our mission of writing our pourquoi stories, we decided to use our smart skills and use AI to generate a picture of Maungarei, using our opinions of how it would look if the maunga warrior was still awake, as you see here this is my picture I generated, right below:
