Once a Panther

LI: to identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

For today’s reading learning activity, we learnt about another connection between the present and the past about the polynesian panthers. Me and my reading group had read a fiction book about the polynesian panthers named “Once a Panther”, the information we learnt is, in 2019 there was a elder that had told the story of the Dawn Raids between the Palagi and the Polynesian Panthers, to his grandchildren. We didn’t learn that much from the text because the priaknowledge that we have learnt from the 2 previous texts connected the history of the Polynesian Panthers, pretty much covers the entire text of “Once a Panther”, but what we found shocking is that there were fictional stories based on the Dawn Raids, along with specific people involved in the Dawn Raids.

I found this activity very interesting because of learning about shameful fights caused by the new zealanders, against the polynesian panthers.

The Full Story of The Polynesian Panthers

LI: to activate prior knowledge related to migration, injustice, and historical events in NZ

For todays Reading learning activity, me and my group learnt how to gather information from images by infering what might be happening. The 2 text that we read, was called the “The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesians Panthers”, and also “Shameful stain on NZ history” [Part 2 of the story]. We learnt about how police officers brutally busted into random housings, demanding for peoples passports, and how the police criticizes the polynesians more than any of the other communities, accusing, torturing, and deporting them out of NZ back to their homes all because of overstaying. According to the history of NZ, in the past, the “government” had caused generational-trauma. After we read about the text, we started our work on questioning, predicting, inferring, researching, and commenting all about the text on the google doc we were sent, and to also begin some tasks about the text.

I found this activity very interesting and enduring to read because of seeing people go through generational-trauma, which is unbelievable, not knowing how it would feel to be in the islanders shoes.

Matariki 2025

LI: to identify Matariki as the Maori New Year and explain its cultural importance.

LI: Explain how the rising of Matariki signaled a time of celebration, reflection, and preparation.

LI: Create a piece of work that expresses their understanding of the significance of the Matariki stars.

For this week’s Inquiry activity, me and my group (Me, Haloti & Jeremiah) decided to make a presentation all about Matariki, (including the stars). We were given instructions that we have specific questions and missions to complete about the meaning of Matariki, it’s importance, it’s celebrations, it’s past, including us making designs about Matariki. Above here is a peak of our Matariki Presentation.

I found this activity interesing as it was quite a mystery, especially using our research to look at Matariki’s history.

Impact of Volcanoes

LI: to discuss the impact of volcanoes on the enviroment & human communities.

For this week’s inquiry activity, we decided to research about the impact of specific volcanoes. The volcano that me and my group (Me, CJ, River & Taisorn) chose was called “Whakaari White Island”. We used our smart researching skills to look at several links and gathering information about many things about it like it’s name, location, age, type, along with 2 interesting fact about’s Whakaari White Island’s volcanic eruption. Then after that, me and my group decided to add all of the information that we gathered, all inside 1 DLO, including some attributed images. After that, when we finished, we discussed that we would decorate it. 1 interesting fact: The Whakaari White Island’s volcano is a phreatomagmatic type, because it’s eruption has eliminated exactly 22 people, which their bodies were eventually washed out in the wild sea.

I enjoyed this extremely interesting and fun activity because of learning a new word: “Phreatomagmatic, (in volcanic terms, it means that it is 1 of the deadliest volcanoes ever witnessed)”

Dot to Dot Connections about the Kuaka Birds.

LI: To draw the lines between the words to show how the connections you have made.

For our reading learning, our reading group learnt how to use Dot to Dot Connections about the Kuaka Birds. Dot to Dot Connections is about make connections by using keywords from the texts of the story we have read, like Kuaka Birds. The 7 keywords we used to make a connection alltogether, was Flocks, Diet, Migration, Navigation, Habitat, Pollution, and Endangered Birds. We found out how to make connections by using the images from the story and the information, and also using our research skills.

I found this activity very brilliant because of making my Dot to Dot Connection DLO as a loop.

Mapping the Migratory Flight of the Kuaka Birds

LI: To use Google My Maps to show the migratory flight path of the Kuaka.

For our reading learning, our reading group learnt how to use google maps to show the migratory of the Kuaka Birds flight. The Kuaka Birds travel far because of how their flight takes 9 days just by going from NZ to Alaska. Their Habitat is very rough and that they are starting to become endangered birds because of how there are predators expandding around the world. Their Diet is eating worms, insects and sometimes even leaves according to my researching. According to my researching they have a nonstop flight so they don’t really stop for refueling unless they make it to their destination. Fun fact is that these Kuaka birds have an annual flight of 11,000 km from NZ to Alaska which takes only 9 days.

I found this activithy so fascinating because of my curiousity keeps me thinking, do Kuaka Birds even get sleep?

Infographic about Kuaka Birds

LI: to create an inforgraphic that tells others about the migration of the Kuaka Birds.

For our reading learning, our reading group learnt how to create infographic DLO’s about the Kuaka Birds. We started off by using our smart researching skills to research about the Kuaka Birds Diet, Habitat, Appearances, Scientific name, and 2 Fun Facts about them. Then we searched about for pictures of the Kuaka Birds to post. The purpose of us creating an infographic DLO, is to show the information and explain all about the Kuaka Birds.

I found this activity very vulnearable and a bit interesting because of use our research skills for 2 extra facts about the Kuaka Birds.

The Kuaka Birds

LI: to make connection with (self, text and the world).

For our reading learning we learnt how to make connections with from the story of Kuaka Birds to (ourselves, text and the world). We learnt how to make connections just by looking at what’s happening on pages and just by looking at the title. For our group we learnt that the words: Migration, Navigation, Habitat, Pollution, and Diet, could possibly have connections with them just like us.

I enjoyed this interesting activity because of learning about endangered birds, that there is a 50% chance of seeing Kuaka Birds around NZ

Working In Groups

LI: to understand that everyone has a role to play when we are working in groups.

For our reading activity, our reading group learnt how to do reading in best way possible. What we were taught about doing reading in LS2, is that we learn best by learning with and from each other. The book that our group desired to use for our reading activity was a book about air-able birds named “Kuaka Birds”. We learnt to use our prediction of what the book was about by using our eyes on the pages and the title. We learnt that using communication helps us alot by sharing our honest thoughts, answers and ideas.

I enjoyed this reading activity because of using communication and working with my reading group, and to do my learning in one of the best ways possible.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

LI: to explain why sleep is important.

This week our class learnt about why sleep is important. We started off by getting in groups of 3 and 2, which I paired with Matheus and Maurice. we learnt that sleeping depends on how old you are, for example: if your 6 -12, you need 9 – 12 hours of sleep. When we finished doing research and taking notes about why sleep is important, we decided to make a DLO about why is sleep important, to put all our information we learnt, all into the google drawing. Once we added our information in the DLO, we decided to decorate the google drawing with tools. When we finished we made it more interesting by putting links on our DLO that take you to websites, filled with information of why and how much sleep do humans and animals need.

I found this activity important and helpful, because it is important for our health, especially when you have to deal with epilepsy, or seizures, and that our DLO would be helpful for people that are unsure about their health.
